Are All Number Plates in Australia the Same Size?
1st Oct 2026
No. The standard number plate size in Australia is 372mm wide by 134mm high, and that covers most passenger cars in most states. Victoria issues a slightly shorter plate, slimline plates drop the height to 100mm or less, and motorcycle plates are a different shape again. Order frames for the wrong plate and the stock sits in the yard unfitted. This guide gives the sizes by state and names the branded number plate frame that fits each one.
What is the standard number plate size in Australia?
A general-issue car plate measures 372mm x 134mm in NSW, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, the ACT and the Northern Territory. Victoria issues its standard plate at 372mm x 132mm, 2mm shorter. Berlex's Standard frames are made for all standard 6-digit plates, so the Victorian difference does not change the frame you order.
Dimensions come from state transport authority specifications and can change between plate series. Measure a plate from the stock you are fitting before a bulk run.

Every state issues two plates for a registered car, one front and one rear. Motorcycles and trailers carry a rear plate only.
What size are slimline plates, and which frame fits them?
Slimline plates keep the 372mm width and cut the height. Three types of plates cover Australia (Standard, Slimline, and Premium). In Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory the slimline plate is 372mm x 100mm. Berlex's Slimline frame (372mm x 100mm) is made for it.
NSW, the ACT and some SA series split the sizes. The front plate is around 84mm high and the rear plate is 107mm high. One frame does not cover both. Berlex's Premium Front frame fits the front plate and the Premium frame (372mm x 107mm) fits the rear. This front and rear split is the detail most often missed on a NSW frame order.
Slimline plates are a personalised option in most states, so a dealer's stock will usually mix standard and slimline plates. Count both before you order.
Do Euro plates need a different frame?
Yes. A Euro plate is 520mm wide by about 110mm high, and Victoria also issues a Euro mini at 372mm x 100mm. The full-size Euro plate will not fit a standard or slimline frame. The Euro mini uses the same footprint as a Victorian slimline plate, so the Slimline frame fits it. If your dealership moves European or prestige stock on full-size Euro plates, tell Berlex the plate size at the quote stage. The right option is then confirmed before production.
Do custom or personalised plates use a different size?
No. A personalised plate uses the same footprint as the plate style it is ordered in. A standard-size custom plate from myPlates in NSW or EzyPlates in SA measures the same as a general-issue plate. Only the character combination, colour or finish changes. Order frames by plate style, standard, slimline or Euro, and ignore whether the combination is custom.
What size are motorcycle number plates?
Motorcycle plates are smaller than car plates and the size varies by state. Western Australia uses a wider format than the rest of the country. Berlex makes two motorcycle frames: the Standard Motorcycle frame (188mm x 127mm) for all states except WA, and the WA Motorcycle frame (270mm x 124mm). Both come in black with a minimum order of 250.
What can a number plate frame cover?
Every state requires the plate's characters, state name and any slogan to stay fully visible, and NSW specifies legibility from 20 metres. A frame that hides any part of the plate counts as an obscured plate. That is why the branding area sits below the characters on every Berlex frame. Frame and cover rules sit with your state transport authority. Check them before a bulk fit-out, and use only clear, flat, untinted number plate covers if you add a cover over the plate.
How do you order the right frame size for dealer stock?
Three questions settle almost every frame order:
- Which plate styles are on the stock: standard, slimline or Euro?
- Which states will the vehicles be registered in?
- Are the front and rear plates the same height?
Answer those and the frame family picks itself. Berlex makes its number plate frames in-house in Toowoomba, Queensland, in black or white. The minimum order is 250 per frame type, with a standard 4-week process from quote to delivery. Each frame carries your dealership name, logo, phone number or campaign message. If a plate size on your lot is not covered above, send a measurement and Berlex will confirm the fit before anything is printed.
Tell us which states your stock is registered in and we will confirm the frame size. Request a quote for 250 frames or call 1800 680 603.
Frequently asked questions
What is the standard number plate size in Australia?
372mm x 134mm for a general-issue car plate in every state except Victoria, which issues 372mm x 132mm. A Standard frame fits both.
Which frame fits a NSW slimline plate?
Two frames. The front plate takes the Premium Front frame and the rear plate takes the Premium frame at 372mm x 107mm. Order both sizes for NSW slimline stock.
Can one frame size cover a whole dealership?
Rarely. Most lots carry a mix of standard and slimline plates, and NSW and ACT stock adds a front and rear split. Count plate styles across the stock before ordering.
Does a Euro plate fit a standard frame?
No. A full-size Euro plate is 520mm wide, well outside a 372mm frame. Confirm Euro plate sizes with Berlex at the quote stage.
Does the frame size change for a personalised plate?
No. Personalised plates share the footprint of the style they are issued in, so order by style.
What is the minimum order for Berlex number plate frames?
250 frames per type, in black or white, made in Toowoomba and shipped Australia-wide. Pricing starts from $0.75 each ex GST for car frames.
